A foreign driver’s license alone should not be your rental-car plan. Check both your legal permission to drive in Korea and the rental company’s conditions for the exact driver and vehicle. A paid reservation is not proof that the counter will release the car.
Legal permission and rental approval are separate
Korea’s Ministry of Government Legislation explains that a qualifying international driving permit can authorize driving for up to one year from entry, limited to the vehicle classes recorded on it. The permit and underlying license must remain valid; the one-year rule is not an extension of an expired document. Special recognition arrangements can exist, so verify your specific document if relying on one.
For an ordinary tourist rental, prepare the original physical IDP, valid home-country license and passport. Match the names across documents and the booking. A commercial “international license” sold as a digital download is not a substitute for the recognized permit required by the rental company.
Get the permit through the proper home-country issuer
- United States: use AAA’s official IDP application guidance and allow time for processing and delivery.
- Canada: CAA identifies itself as Canada’s authorized IDP issuer; use its process for your valid Canadian license.
- Australia: use an Australian Automobile Association-authorized issuing organization, such as RACV, and check the application requirements.
Nationality alone does not determine which permit you should buy: the licensing country and authorized issuing process matter. Arrange it before travel instead of assuming the Korean rental counter can issue one. Check the permit category for the actual passenger vehicle; a large van may require a different entitlement.
A rental-company example, with an important conflict
LOTTE Rent-a-Car’s English requirements list drivers aged 21–79 and recognized Geneva- or Vienna-convention IDPs, with vehicle-class conditions. These are the company’s published rental requirements, not a universal age rule for every operator.
Payment warning based on conflicting official pages: LOTTE’s general requirements mention debit or credit cards and several permitted cardholder relationships, while its Jeju guide asks for a credit card in the main driver’s name and says debit cards are not accepted. Confirm your chosen branch’s requirements in writing. A physical credit card in the main driver’s name is a prudent preparation; do not present the more permissive page as a guarantee.
Ask for the complete cost before confirming
| Cost or condition | Question to ask |
|---|---|
| Rental and driver eligibility | Does this quote accept my age, license, IDP category and driving history? |
| Damage cover | What waiver or insurance is included or mandatory, and what deductible or exclusions remain? |
| Loss of use and damage exclusions | Can charges remain for downtime, tires, glass, underbody damage or a single-vehicle incident? |
| Additional driver | Must this person attend pickup with original documents and be added to the agreement? |
| Fuel, tolls and return | What is the fuel or battery rule, how are tolls settled, and what counts as late return? |
LOTTE’s current page describes mandatory CDW and different mainland and Jeju conditions. Do not assume a zero deductible removes all other liabilities. Read the agreement for your vehicle and location, including accident reporting and roadside assistance.
Do the navigation check while parked
Enter the first destination by its Korean address or exact place listing. Confirm the correct branch and parking entrance. Ask staff to demonstrate the car’s navigation language, phone connection and toll equipment. If using your phone, prepare power, a secure mount and a data plan that supports the route.
Do not claim your home navigation setup will work identically in Korea. NAVER documents English navigation, but device compatibility and in-car integration still need checking. This article does not report a live driving or navigation test.
Pickup and return checklist
- Present original documents and resolve any eligibility discrepancy before signing.
- Walk around the car with staff. Record existing damage, fuel or battery level and the agreed return location.
- Locate the roadside-assistance number and learn the required accident procedure.
- Confirm toll handling, parking arrangements and all authorized drivers.
- At return, keep the inspection and final-payment records.
Planning example: if your itinerary stays in central Seoul and your hotel has no confirmed parking, compare rail and taxis before renting. For a rural itinerary with several stops, compare the rental’s full cost with available transport and the time you are comfortable driving. This is a decision example, not a claim that a rental is always necessary outside Seoul.
