Choose a map by whether you can identify the correct place and follow its route. For a first visit, prepare NAVER Map for everyday directions and keep another way to verify an address. An English business name, a neighborhood pin and the actual entrance can be three different locations.
What the developers currently document
| Option | Documented capability | How to decide |
|---|---|---|
| NAVER Map | Maps in Korean, English, Japanese and Chinese; English navigation. | Check that you can find your hotel, read a transit route and identify the final exit. |
| KakaoMap | Directions for driving, public transport, walking and cycling, with navigation. | Try the exact destination and route display you need; do not assume every place detail is translated. |
| Your existing map app | Features depend on the app, location and mode. | Keep saved places if useful, but verify the actual Korean route and transport mode before relying on them. |
This comparison uses the developers’ published descriptions. It is not a device benchmark or a claim that one app always has better arrival estimates. It also avoids the blanket claim that Google Maps is wholly unusable in Korea: verify the function you need, rather than treating one limitation as a verdict on every feature.
Find the right place before asking for directions
- Copy the full property or venue name from its official website or booking confirmation.
- If an English search is ambiguous, paste the Korean name or street address.
- Compare the street address and branch name with the confirmation.
- Check the entrance or pickup area. A pin in a large building is not necessarily its hotel lobby or vehicle entrance.
- Save the place and keep its Korean address as plain text for a driver or staff member.
Illustrative example: a hotel brand has branches in Myeongdong and Gangnam. Searching only the brand may produce a valid result for the wrong branch. Checking the street address before routing prevents a mistake that no turn-by-turn instruction can fix later.
Read a public-transport route as a sequence
Write down the boarding station or stop, line or bus number, travel direction, transfer point and final exit. Compare the walking sections: a route with fewer train minutes can require a longer transfer passage. With a suitcase, look for elevator information and verify accessibility with the station operator when it is essential.
At a bus stop, check the side of the road and the next stop in the sequence. On a subway platform, compare the next-station sign with your route. When a suggested route changes, first check whether the starting location or departure time changed, rather than assuming the previous route was wrong.
Use live information for the right questions
A saved screenshot can preserve an address and exit number. It cannot provide updated delays, road restrictions or a new route after you take a wrong turn. Likewise, a business listing is a starting point for opening hours, not a substitute for the venue’s own notice when a reservation or long journey depends on it.
For the final train, check station- and direction-specific timetable information through the operator. Do not infer the last usable connection from a general statement that the subway runs until midnight.
Bookings are separate from navigation
NAVER’s June 2026 passport-verification update adds a foreign-visitor path for supported bookings, orders and payments without a Korean number. That does not mean every listed venue accepts bookings through the same process. Finding a restaurant and securing a reservation remain separate tasks.
Prepare a small offline packet
Save your hotel name and Korean address, booking details, the next station or stop, a screenshot of the destination area and a way to contact the property. Keep a battery reserve for the return trip. If data fails, move somewhere safe before troubleshooting; do not keep following a stale location dot through traffic.
No live handset route, walking journey or in-car navigation session was tested for this article. The workflow examples explain what to check; they are not screenshots or reports of an actual trip.
