You do not need to buy a Korean number solely because you are visiting Korea. Start with the services you intend to use. Map data, a restaurant calling you back, an SMS code and Korean identity verification are four different requirements.
Match the plan to the task
| Task | What to check before buying |
|---|---|
| Maps, messaging and email | A suitable data connection and access to your existing accounts. |
| Calling a hotel or receiving a local callback | Voice service, a usable Korean number and incoming/outgoing call conditions. |
| Restaurant waitlist text or ordinary SMS code | SMS reception on that exact plan and acceptance by that particular service. |
| Identity verification for a regulated or domestic-only service | The required identity record and verification method; a number alone may not qualify. |
Do not infer features from the presence of “010” on an order page. Ask whether the plan supports incoming calls, outgoing calls, incoming SMS, outgoing SMS and the specific authentication you need. The word “verification” is often used for both a simple code and a formal identity check.
A concrete operator example
LG U+’s current travel guide distinguishes data-only plans from Data + Voice plans. Its data-only service does not provide calls, texts or SMS verification. Data + Voice supplies a Korean 010 number and supports ordinary call/text use, but the operator says this does not provide Korean bank or government identity verification. Outgoing call credit and the selected plan still matter.
The same guide says a data-only purchase cannot simply have voice added later. If callbacks are part of your itinerary, settle that choice before ordering. These statements describe LG U+’s listed products; they are not a claim that every reseller or competing carrier uses the same rules.
NAVER bookings no longer justify a blanket “you need 010” rule
NAVER announced on June 9, 2026 that passport verification had launched on June 4. Eligible foreign-passport users can verify on a smartphone without a Korean mobile number for supported NAVER booking, ordering and payment services. NAVER also says support will expand in phases.
For your intended restaurant or activity, check the available booking path and complete any required account verification before your travel day. The announcement does not guarantee that every venue, foreign card or reservation type works. It does mean that advice saying all foreigners need a Korean number for NAVER is too broad.
Three practical choices
Data-only can fit: your bookings are already confirmed, communication is through email or messaging, and you have checked any taxi or reservation app you intend to use.
Voice and SMS may be worth paying for: a small hotel expects telephone contact, you want to call businesses yourself, or a planned waitlist uses local SMS. Confirm the precise function rather than buying “more features” without a use for them.
A tourist number will not solve everything: a service asks for a resident-linked identity check or a domestic payment product. Look for its official foreign-visitor process or a supported alternative. Do not borrow another person’s identity or assume buying a second SIM changes eligibility.
Keep access to your home number
US, Canadian and Australian travelers should check their home carrier’s roaming charges and bank-code delivery before departure. A Korean travel line does not move your bank account’s registered number. If your phone supports two active lines, label them clearly and follow the carriers’ instructions for data and voice selection; device and plan support vary.
Before leaving the airport or Wi-Fi, verify that the features you paid for actually work on your device. Check a map, read the assigned number and available voice balance, and keep the operator’s support details. This guide has not tested SIM activation or authentication on a live handset.
