Korea Tax Refund for Tourists: Immediate or Airport Refund?

SHOPPING IN KOREA

Official information checked: October 20, 2026

Before paying, ask the cashier whether your refund will be deducted now or claimed later. The answer tells you what to pay, which paperwork to keep, and whether you still have a refund task on departure day.

This guide covers goods bought to take out of Korea. It does not cover hotel stays or medical services. If you already have refund forms and are packing to leave, use the Incheon Airport tax refund guide.

Check eligibility before choosing a refund method

For an ordinary foreign tourist, the basic requirements include a stay of less than six months, an eligible purchase of at least ₩15,000, and departure with the goods within three months of purchase. Buy from a participating tax refund store. Visit Seoul explains these eligibility conditions.

The goods must remain new, unopened and unused. Overseas Korean visitors have separate residency and stay-length requirements; check the Korea Tourism Organization’s eligibility guide.

If you want to use a product during the trip, decide that before including its refund in your budget. For example, keep the skincare you intend to take home separate from the toiletries you will open at the hotel.

The purchase limits that decide your next step

Immediate refund limits
TestRequirement
Minimum eligible receipt₩15,000
Single purchase for immediate refundAt least ₩15,000 and less than ₩1,000,000
Total purchases using immediate refund during the stayNo more than ₩5,000,000

These are purchase amounts, not amounts paid back to you. The shop must also offer immediate refund and verify your eligibility.

Your situationWhat to ask for
A purchase of exactly ₩1,000,000Ask about the regular refund route; it exceeds the immediate-refund threshold.
₩4,900,000 already used for immediate refunds, then a ₩150,000 purchaseThe new total would exceed ₩5,000,000. Ask about a regular refund for the new purchase.

Know which of these three things the store is offering

Immediate refund: after checking your passport, the shop deducts the refund from the amount you pay. NICE’s instructions say this completed route does not require a separate airport refund claim. Keep the receipt so you can distinguish it from purchases still awaiting a refund. NICE refund procedure.

Regular refund, collected at departure: pay at the store, obtain the refund form, complete export validation when leaving, then collect the refund through the available counter or machine. Receiving a form at the shop is only the start of this route. Visit Seoul refund procedure.

Advance refund at a downtown counter: do not mark the transaction “finished” merely because you have received money. Ask the operator what export validation and document submission remain. Global Blue warns that an advance refund can be charged back, with fees, if its conditions are not met. Global Blue Help Centre, question 12.

Ask these questions while the cashier can still help

  1. “Is the refund already deducted from what I am paying?” Ask the cashier to point to the relevant amount on the receipt.
  2. “Which document do I need for the refund?” Keep the sales receipt and any separate refund form together.
  3. “Which company handles this claim?” Note the operator printed on the form; it is the starting point for later queries.
  4. “What refund amount should I expect, and are there further fees?” Record the amount quoted for your purchase and chosen payout method.

Before leaving, check that any passport details on the form match your passport and that the printed document is legible. A photograph is useful as your own backup record; keep the original documents too.

Compare the price after the quoted refund

Do not budget on a blanket “10% back.” For example, NICE advertises refunds of approximately 6.5%–8.2% of the purchase amount for its service, while Global Blue says service and currency conversion fees may affect its estimates. These are operator-specific statements, not a universal payout rate. Check your own form and payment terms. NICE · Global Blue, questions 3–4.

Illustrative price comparison: Store A charges ₩180,000 and quotes a ₩10,000 refund. Its expected final cost is ₩170,000 if that refund is received. Store B charges ₩175,000 with no refund. A saves ₩5,000 overall, not ₩10,000 compared with B. Compare the same item, size and included accessories.

If you are considering a separate trip to collect a refund, compare that saving with the additional transport cost. Use the refund amount on your paperwork, rather than estimating from the shelf price.

Leave the store with a clear record

For each purchase, record the store, purchase amount, quoted refund, operator and status: deducted at checkout, pending, or advance received—conditions remain. This small record is especially useful when several shops use different refund companies.

For pending claims, continue with Incheon Airport tax refund: luggage, validation and payout locations.
