Break Time and Last Order in Korea: Read Restaurant Hours Before You Go

For a meal, the useful deadline is when the restaurant can still accept your order. Closing time may be later. A restaurant can have diners inside while its kitchen has already stopped taking new orders.

Four different messages on a restaurant listing

LabelMeaningWhat it means for your visit
Business hoursThe broad operating window. Check the break and order cutoffs separately.
Break / preparation timeA pause between service periods. Do not assume you can enter and order during it.
Last order / ordering closesThe kitchen’s ordering deadline, which may occur before a break or before closing.
Regular closure / temporary closureA day or period when the normal schedule does not apply.

재료 소진 means ingredients have run out; 품절 means an item is sold out. 접수마감 can mean registration or intake has closed, including a waitlist. These messages do not all mean the same thing: one dish may be unavailable while the restaurant still serves others.

A real published timetable: Yujin Sikdang in Jongno

The Korea Tourism Organization listing for Yujin Sikdang (유진식당), 40 Jong-ro 17-gil, Jongno-gu, Seoul, publishes 11:00–21:00 business hours, a 14:30–16:00 break, lunch last order at 14:00 and dinner last order at 20:00. It lists Mondays and national holidays as closure days. We checked the listing October 22, 2026; this is published information, not a visit or a phone confirmation.

Example arrivalHow to read that timetable
13:30 on a listed operating dayBefore the published lunch cutoff. There is still a possible lunch window, subject to seating and food availability.
14:10After lunch last order, even though the break begins at 14:30. Do not plan on ordering lunch.
15:30Inside the break. Plan around the 16:00 restart rather than waiting for someone to take an order now.
20:15After dinner last order, although the listed closing time is 21:00.
MondayThe closure-day rule overrides the daily hours.

These are interpretations of that listing, not guaranteed admission times. Check a current notice or contact the restaurant before a special trip. The same calculation can be applied to another restaurant only after substituting its own published hours.

Build in the queue, not just the walk

Illustrative calculation: a different restaurant’s last order is 20:30. It is 19:45, the walk is estimated at 20 minutes, and you want to allow 30 minutes for waiting. That places possible seating at 20:35. The headline “closes at 21:00” does not make this a dependable dinner plan.

Do not subtract a fixed “safe” number of minutes for every restaurant. A walk-in queue, a reserved seating, a food court counter and a café can have different cutoff rules. If you are near a deadline, ask whether your party can still be seated and order, rather than asking only whether the business is open.

Questions that resolve the uncertainty

— Can we order a meal now?
— What time is last order?
— When does the break end?
— Can two people join the waitlist now?
— Can we still order this dish?

If staff say the kitchen or waitlist is closed, choose another meal rather than assuming visible tables mean an exception is available. A reservation for a specific time also needs its own late-arrival and cancellation rules checked.

Use the listing, then check the latest notice

  1. Open the exact restaurant branch in your map or booking service.
  2. Expand its hours to see the day, break periods and last-order entries.
  3. Check temporary notices and the menu you intend to order.
  4. Calculate your arrival plus likely waiting time.
  5. When the margin is small, contact the restaurant or choose a nearby alternative with a clear remaining service window.

A map’s “open” badge can be a useful first filter. The detailed schedule, current notice and staff confirmation answer whether you can actually eat there now. Once you have a table, use the separate restaurant guide for ordering, self-service and payment.
